heheh, yes.. I think that would be a good idea(learning maya). What I would do is solve the problem using scripts first...once you have a good solution, tackle it using the API.
Maya's MEL/PYTHON are very powerful scripting tools and it's been a really long time since I needed to write a plug using the API. I'm not sure what you mean by "transforming those verts wrong"?
