I admit I didn't read too much into what you are doing, other than catching the part about wanting to save a backup copy of a file to another location, but using only Maya's cmds module or python builtins. So I was curious why you want to avoid using os.path.join for joining path components, and shutil for copying a backup from from one place to another.
