as well, with all the things that make Maya great, the image plane implementation in 2012 is not quite their best... Aside from this, be careful when you then render the scene, I've seen over 100 user cases where the -iip (ignore image planes) is just simply unresponsive and will render your image plane no matter what settings you use. At the time when this came up 2013 was thankfully not far away. Is there an explicit reason you can not upgrade? (long running show, financial,etc.) Poly planes as a replacement, as Otto mentions, works in the meantime :)
It's one of the little quirks that fall into the shadows since the 2012 users are few, and the poly workaround is so easy it isn't worth writing a tool to compensate.
