Hey Paul, I was looking for the cask module and when I was checking around with the Maya alembic module it didn't seem to include it. I need to do some iteration over the file contents and some re-mapping to objects within the scene and it looked like the base alembic module didn't really allow for that easily.
Yes the Exocortex one is much better than even the cask module I think.
