For what its worth, the Go language also makes use of the equivalent of sphinx doctests's, for the same purpose that Marcus described. They are used to write examples of usage, which also automatically become unittests that have to pass. It enforces working examples, so that they don't go out of date when code changes, when someone forgets to update the text:
