Mac/OSX/README in the sources, ./configure --help, or mailing list archives. Where would you have expected to learn about the option? Yes, it is different than Universal Python because you compiled different sources. Universal Python 2.4.3 is a fork of Python that includes several Mac-specific features that aren't in the mainline sources until Python 2.5. The Universal Python repository is at: http://svn.pythonmac.org/python24/python24-fat/ Universal Python 2.4.3 does have "pythonw", for compatibility, but it is the same as what you get when you run "python".
