That's still not the version of GCC you should have. gcc -v should be 4.0.1 by default, and gcc-3.3 -v should be build 1819. It sounds like you might be installing an OS X 10.3 compiler on OS X 10.4 or something. Don't do that. Get the latest Xcode from connect.apple.com and install that.
