There's a problem here. If you go to the python.org page for the latest release of 2.3.x (see <http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.3.7/>), it tells you that this is a source-only release, and anyone needing a binary release should use 2.3.5 (see <http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.3.5/>). However, there are no binary releases for Macintosh that are listed -- Windows gets one, but everyone else is supposed to use the source archive. Going to the Mac Python page at <http://www.python.org/download/mac/>, there's pointers for newer binary installers (using Python 2.4.x) based on which OS you're running (see <http://www.pythonmac.org/packages/>), but nothing for the older binary installers (based on Python 2.3.x). Looking in the "Legacy Packages" at <http://www.pythonmac.org/packages/legacy.html>, I don't see any older binary installers. So, it looks like I have no choice but to try to do a source install of Python 2.3.7.
