You didn't hurt your system install. I've been running python built from source like that alongside my system python for years with no problems. Not sure about IDLE... Mine works fine with 2.5.2 compiled and installed as you did.
I'm curious of what the real benefits of installing python as a framework are, and what exactly it means to be a 'framework' Maybe it makes python more accessible to other parts of the OS? Maybe it helps when compiling mixed language packages...ie PyObjC or PyQT? I'm grabbing at straws... Google would probably help, but it's Christmas, and I think the group could benefit from knowing as well!
