There seems little crossover between 3D for animation or promotion and 
manufacturing.
The normal workflow must be design with proprietary SW to output to CAM, and 
also
output a mesh and send it to the art dept for promotion purposes.  Then 
animators
and sometimes architects grab those furniture models for display on a whole 
building scale,
where a gap of .2 mm between surface faces is of no concern.

Are STEP and IGES text files?  What is a good reference for them from
the viewpoint of translating?
