Please notice that all package name and versions stated in INSTALL
file are related to Fedora distribution and are listed there just as a
reference.

I would discourage using external repositories because normally there
is one reason for this package for being not be available in official
repositories, but supporting this scenario is something you need to
think about because it will consume your time and effort. Anyway I
don't use Ubuntu so I can't talk from my personal experience.

If you are not sure you can handle the situation properly, I would
suggest to submit a patch with your changes and I will merge it with
current development version if everything is fine. Hopefully next
version (1.9.0) will be available in a few weeks.
