Ok, thank you, and thanks Wander. I only just discovered hidraw so I had no idea if it was better/more appropriate for my application. I might want some sort of cross-platform functionality, but that will be later. Anyway, one day I will find out how to do this with pyUSB (or someone else will). For now, I think I can achieve my goal with hidraw. Thanks everyone for help, and for tolerating my newbie questions.
