When I started using PyUSB, Windows was my target platform (Windows
MCE7 machine with an LCD display) but I knew that Windows was going to
be tricky to get going so I started using Linux (Ubuntu) for my
initial testing to make sure I could connect and "do stuff", then
started on getting the drivers installed/configured correctly under
Windows.

You can use a Ubuntu live CD if you do not want to install Linux. This
worked for me as I was already familiar with Linux but for a new Linux
user the learning curve could be too steep.
