The problem is about keeping authors to respect the copyright of the copied text. The existing link to the source article in the summary legally is sufficient, but authors are not easily accessible. It's why edithistory subpage was created. So I don't think adding an option to disable it is a good idea. I think there's already been a task on it, but I can't find it.

Yes, why not, but I'm afraid if we extend the summary, it's going over the limit with long page titles.
