Out of annoyance I clicked "save" several more times, and it did finally go 
through after erroring the first half-dozen times.
  
  This seems a very different thing, though. The errors reported by pywikibot 
seemed sporadic, and I could trace them to a specific failure on a backend. 
What you are describing seems like a persistent behaviour that would possibly 
not be related to what I was investigating at the moment.
