The doubling font thing doesn't seem to affect the look of things.  I noticed 
it in Illustrator - I went to delete a letter and it was still there...

Also - after more poking about, I see that PyX does indeed strip out whole font 
sets.  Using Adobe Garamond Premier (and mathpazo) is fine and results in the 
above file - 34kb.  However, in my Garamond Premier .sty file, I declared an 
option that defines a new math alphabet.  I then used this alphabet to redefine 
the math symbols 0-9 (numbers).  

Using that option makes the above graph 700kb.  Turning that option off (but 
still using Garamond Premier) makes the 34kb file, so I'm pretty happy now.  If 
I *really* need different numbers for my labelling, I can run the whole thing 
through Ghostscript as detailed in my previous mail.
