Okay, I think this is a real issue and not an artifact of a bad data
point.

I'm installing PyX 0.9 with python 2.4 on a separate machine, Mac OS X
10.3.9. A reasonably pristine install with the latest modules.

I installed a new MacTeX installer from http://www.tug.org/mactex/

When I run the PyX hello.py, I get a load of warnings like:
   warnings.warn("Ignoring line %i in mapping file '%s': %s" % (lineno,
filename, e))
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.4/lib/python2.4/site-
packages/pyx/dvifile.py:396: UserWarning: Ignoring line 4089 in mapping
file 'psfonts.map': wrong syntax

similar to an error reported in February of 2006 marked as fixed.
Checking my pyx and python config, it appears the MacTeX installer is
slightly newer:

> pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)
> kpathsea version 3.5.5
> Copyright 2005 Peter Breitenlohner (eTeX)/Han The Thanh (pdfTeX).
> Kpathsea is copyright 2005 Karl Berry and Olaf Weber.

The system where things are working has an older TeX release:

> e-TeX (Web2C 7.5.2) 3.141592-2.1
> kpathsea version 3.5.2
> Copyright (C) 1997-2003 The NTS Team.
> Kpathsea is copyright (C) 1997-2003 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

I tried the FAQ recommendation of adding the entries to psfonts.map in
the .pyxrc file but this has no effect. It suggests the default latex
config for this package has changed but I'm not clear on where to start
on this. Is there a PyX setting which could fix this?

Other suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom
