My opinion: If the same feature exists in Excel and OpenOffice, and OpenOffice does not correctly translate a document using that feature, then it is a defect in OpenOffice. If OpenOffice lacks the feature, and because of that the document is not translated correctly, then it is an ENHANCEMENT or FEATURE request. For example, both Excel and OpenOffice have the ability to merge cells. If OpenOffice does not handle an Excel file with merged cells, then this is a DEFECT. However, OpenOffice does not support "word art". So, if OpenOffice fails to read word art from a Word file, this is not a DEFECT, but a request for a new FEATURE. However, in no case should OpenOffice crash or hang when loading a document. Even if the document uses features we don't support, we should still load and try to "degrade gracefully". So if you see a crash or hang, then always mark that as a DEFECT.
