Making progress but have a problem, please ... I installed genisomage
which has replaced mkisofs on Debian, and made changes to qdvdauthor.ini.
I'm attempting to create a PAL iso image of a background picture
(resized to PAL), a single button that takes a single transition to a
single video which exists as ntsc, making the needed option change to
'"ffmpeg -i "/tmp/Plan9/file/file.ac3" -i "/tmp/Plan9/file/file.m2v"
-aspect 4:3 -target pal-dvd ...'
Everything seems to work well until "spumux -m dvd "/tmp/Plan9/Main Menu
VMGM/menu.xml < ..." when there occurs "INFO: no default video format,
must explicitly specify NTSC or PAL", but the command completes
successfully with exit status 0:
$ spumux -m dvd "/tmp/Plan9/Main Menu VMGM/menu.xml" < "/tmp/Plan9/Main
Menu VMGM/menu.mpg" > "/tmp/Plan9/Main Menu VMGM_menu.mpg"
DVDAuthor::spumux, version 0.7.0.

The same INFO regarding video format occurs with dvdauthor, although
unsuccessfully:

even though dvdauthor.xml natively contains:
...
<video format="pal" aspect="4:3" resolution="720x576" />
...
"PAL" and "pal" both produce the same error. The empty AUDIO_TS and
VIDEO_TS directories do get created in the proper place however.
Attached is the dvdauthor.xml that is the problem. I'd be grateful if
anyone could advise on this (apparently) last hurdle.

I found the qdvdauthor package in "precise", so I added that repository,
retrieved the gpg key, did an apt-get update, and when I attempted to
install qdvdauthor I was presented with the necessary dependencies:
libqt3-mt, videotrans and dvd-slideshow. Those I then installed and
qdvdauthor was straightforward.

Varol, compiling Qt3 of any version met with the same errors as
previously
stated for some unknown reason.

again,
this time on Debian 7.1 "Wheezy".

I think this works for Debian as well.
If you install it with a package manager is will be easier to see the
missing dependencies.
