I would really appreciate some pointers towards debugging/logging qemu-system-x86_64, so I can see what is going on here?

I have ran a virtual machine through qemu-system-x86_64 for years, but
since the upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10 my machine fails to boot, and falls
into an infinite booting loop. Now I'd love to look into this myself,
but I don't even know where to start.
