Back in the day when I wrote that, GDAL only estimated the stats
whereas the QGIS implementation computes them completely (I think this
situation is still the same today). Perhaps this functionality is not
something important and could be stripped out (or made into a plugin)
- it would certainly speed things up with rasters in some contexts.
