I have just discovered something odd: "when I connected QGIS to a SHAPE file
that was missing a DBF file it displayed OK but no attributes were displayed".

I missed copying the DBF file along with the rest of the SHAPE file to a folder
where I was connecting QGIS to display a file. I didn't realize that the DBF
file was missing until I tried doing something with the attributes. Shouldn't
QGIS alert me to the fact that the DBF file is missing? I am using QGIS version
1.4 .
