Yes, I can confirm on Trunk (~ one week old) on Win7. Now I click the layer name first then click the show/hide box. The present behaviour could be correct though because when you click on the show/hide box the focus is set to that layer anyway. What about leaving the focus on the layer it is on, say Layer1, when the show/hide box of, say Layer2, is clicked?
