I plan to have 4 drawers working on production with QGIS during the
spring, and I just wonder what features I could expect for the next
releases.

To my knowledge not all features will be available in 1.8 - only those
which are not breaking the API .. For that 1.8 got branched right before
the first API breakage.
Probably I am not 100% right with this but I hope it will give you a
direction what to expect ..
Right now I can't give an immediate release date - I am busy working
on a new release management system to make the whole process much
smoother and Werner is busy preparing 1.7.4 so it will still be a
little while before 1.8 comes to light I think.
