From a cartographic point of view such functionality is useful/important. Esp. when dealing with transparency and blending. If you initiate such development, then please make sure that the legend is also taking into account transparency and blending.

Yes, of course they are ready to sponsor such a function, if there is
a general
interest and consensus about this.
Exporting and reimporting is feasible only for occasional stuff, not

workflow.
