I saved a simple project with 3 layers from 1.8.0. Opening it with current master (commit:83445af) renders those 3 layers upside down (layer on top in the layer manager is rendered at the bottom in the map canvas).
Moving layers around confirms the behavior: you have to move point layers at the bottom in order for them to NOT be covered by lineal layers.
