Dear Etienne, Thanks for the suggestion. If I close the creation options in the DEM, I am still a bit short: I see the gdaldem ..... window, but the OK and Close buttons still end up below the bottom of my screen.
I am using Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a 13" Macbook with a resolution of 1280*800 (which, I admit, is a bit small for this sort of thing). As for the python error, I don't know if it is Mac-specific. Maybe someone else can confirm before I file a bug? I managed to run gdal_rasterize from the command line and it worked fine, so the problem is definitely between QGIS and my Mac.
