QGIS Stable with dependency updates? OR: "Stable" QGIS Stable standalone <- If you're new to qgis and want full control when you upgrade (Normal User), don't plan to use many plugins. QGIS Stable updatable+extendable (Even if we rarely push bug fixes releases now) <- If you want bugfixes and updates to underlying libraries (GDAL updates often add formats over time - ie HDF, jpg2000, ecw, mrsid) (Power User) This version is also easier to install additional libraries for various plugins you may want. Plugins with Stable may require lots of extra work. [This is OSGeo4w and Ubuntugis (Line between stable/unstable isn't clear right now)] -- "Development" QGIS development (Developers and Power Users who don't mind occasional non-working versions) [OSGeo4w dev and Nightlies] The first 2 will work except when you hit an occasional bug or briefly during upgrade if you try to upgrade too soon. <- hard to explain Development version assumes you understand instability and are willing to put up with it or help. Not sure if any of that helps simplify the discussion.
