In the server world there is, could also be useful for navigating gigantic data sets. Should definitely be a user toggled option. Clustering http://dev.openlayers.org/releases/OpenLayers-2.13.1/examples/strategy-cluster.html There are a few different ways to do it, and doing it server side can save time when rendering WMS or prevent overload when WFS.
