That's usually where I break out the polygon select tool - which is quite handy for places where you need to be careful.
The unselect already selected behaviour is true for all the selection tools - so at least it's consistent. Sometimes I get annoyed at accidentally unselecting stuff, but more often I'm glad that I have a way of unselecting blocks of features without having to start again. -ramon.
