Not sure if data-defined override for Symbol Size should even be connected to the size-scale method, since in this case it should simply override the symbol size value. Setting a value directly on the Symbols Size input box won't take in consideration the size-scale method (it always use diameter). Don't know if this is now more consistent in 2.9.
