The thing is, I'm not convinced the area is wrong... it's just that QGIS' handling of units with OTF on/off ellipsoid ON/OFF is extremely confusing (ie, I don't even fully understand it). That's what I was hoping to get to the bottom of with this question... but we're out of time for this, I'm too cautious to make large changes which would be required to change this behaviour this late in the cycle.
