Sorry for the encryption :) : HI Gerard, I had the same problem (I'm on a Debian testing machine).
I succesfully compiled QGIS master installing first libgsl-dev: So I have libgsl2 and libgsl-dev instelled on my computer and the the compilation works fine. hope this help!
