Hi,

The coolest thing to have regarding projections for small scale data would be the "Adaptive composite map projection" developed by folks from the University of Oregon.

It is developed with the MIT license and could be re-used by QGIS.

See https://github.com/OSUCartography/adaptive-composite-map-projections or Google for it to see demos/videos. http://cartography.oregonstate.edu/ScaleAdaptiveWebMapProjections.html is a good start. A demo is at http://cartography.oregonstate.edu/demos/AdaptiveCompositeMapProjections/

As far as I know, ESRI has plans to include this in their products. We could do the same if we want.

Hi all,

however we are going to solve this ..
+1 for better projection support.

reason: there are a lot of downloadable shapefiles by austrian
government which are obviously produced by ESRI products (with
austrian projection) - but when I load them in QGIS I still get
"custom projection" with the same parameters as the austrian
projection (I think it was 31259). So there must be something wrong
with projection recognition.
So beside the better projection CHOICE support - there is still some
thing to do ..

Hi Paolo,

I think it would be worth to have better projection choice support in QGIS.
It is really hard to select proper projections, esp. for new users. We also
lack some useful worldwide projections in our proj4 database.

One could have a d3.js based preview for world-wide projections.

Would be a good thing for a GSOC project, I think.

Hi all,
during courses, a frequent question is how to find the correct
projection for layers without a .prj or similar.
An interesting approach is this: http://projfinder.com/
BTW, this particular implementation does not work, as it seems to be
strongly biased towards North America.
The idea is still valid, however.
All the best.
