Hi Matthias, It doesn't seem to be related to Chrome. I rebooted my computer and then ran QGIS without any other programs running and the problem still occurs.
I haven't been running updates everyday but the last good state of code was git20160902 8688fef, which was installed on 2016-09-13. In that case I had the feeling that it was triggered by a browser (chrome) running at the same time some expensive javascript operations. This might give a possible lead or be just some random misinterpretation from my side.
