Thanks all for the libs and tips :-) @Martin: I will have a look at Qt-graph, I think it is best to keep close to our core libs. But not sure if it will soon be available in repo's/distro's including the python bindings. Besides this I'm doing this as part of a larger QGIS 2.x plugin, so will eventually probably have to use both ways.
