I saw that there is a aboutToQuit signal emitted just before a QApplication
exists. The following works from QGIS Python Console.
def test():
with open('/tmp/test.txt', 'w') as f:
f.write('wrote while exiting')
qApp.aboutToQuit.connect(test)
