Is it really just a string issue ?
If the text is "Custom CRS", will the CRS stored in the project (or in
the datasource) never become "invalid projection" ?

It's basically just a string issue -- instead of reading "Unknown CRS"
the text should be "Custom CRS". The CRS will still transform
correctly (as you've deduced).
