It works like a charm! It also works when calling qgis_process so it means
there is a way to use plugins outside the default profile (see
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/44783). You made my day!

It seems that if there is any duplicated plugin (same name) in the default
profile location and in the directory specified by QGIS_PLUGINPATH, only the
latter will be loaded. It don't think it's bad, but I think this behaviour
should be noted.

plugins...

Regarding this subject,

I have found this on PyQGIS Cookbook:

Note

By setting QGIS_PLUGINPATH to an existing directory path, you can add this path
to the list of paths that are searched for plugins.

So, I am guessing that one could set a folder with plugins in a network
location and then setup this environment variable in each machine to have all
the plugins available on all machines.

Just guessing, I didn't have the time to test it out.

Hi Richard,

Several core commiters were working at BoundlessGeo back in those days, some
are still there, in Planet Federal.

I was there too, and I was responsible for the documentation. Moving part of
this documentation to QGIS Docs has been in my to do list for a while, but it
never reached the top :-(

Sometime ago, I asked Alessandro Pasoti if those two settings were still valid,
and he said that "AFAIK they were valid", but I abandoned the task before even
trying it.

I still have the original rst files. In case anyone wants to jump on that task
and try it out, I can share it.

Best regards,

Boundless Spatial was acquired by Planet in 2018. Planet

still exists - I think it used to be called Planet Labs. It operates a
constellation of small earth imaging satellites. I would guess that Boundless
Spatial was absorbed into the mapping

  But that's in information-free guess.

It actually became a new division, "Planet Federal":
