The best option is to use a recent gdal compiled without optimization
(in debian, 1.5.2-3 has been uploaded yesterday), otherwise try with
1.5.1 (in debian, 1.5.1-4 works).
I have found that mixing local compiles with precompiled packages
in this sort of situation can be fraught with hassles, generally
beyond my limited abilities in this arena to resolve :-(
Generally you're right: users should use packages (that's what they
are for). All the best.
