In which case it may be worth using a libgdal compiled with an earlier version of gcc for the GEO repository, at least until there
is a fixed version of GDAL available?

The best option is to use a recent gdal compiled without optimization
(in debian, 1.5.2-3 has been uploaded yesterday), otherwise try with
 1.5.1 (in debian, 1.5.1-4 works).

I have found that mixing local compiles with precompiled packages in this sort of situation can be fraught with hassles, generally beyond my limited abilities in this arena to resolve :-(

Generally you're right: users should use packages (that's what they are for). All the best.

The bug is fixed in GDAL in trunk r14996 and in branches/1.5 r14997. See
