Ok, 1.0.0 solves the problem, I can now select multiple polygons without
the entire dataset.

ok, then I understood correctly, I think. This is working for me with a 1.0.0
preview and I am using a debian lenny OS. If it still doesn't work for you with
QGIS version 1.0.0 but on a different OS, please write again to the list, and
ask if people using your OS can verify.

If you open the attribute table after you useed the "Select Features"
tool, you only see the selected features, of course, not all existing.
You can change this behavior, if you open the attribute table first and then
start to selected features. In that case, all feature are displayed in the
table
but only those you selected are color-coded.
