Hello Simon and welcome to the world of QGIS.
Williams Frameworks are fairly straight forward to instal.
It is simply a matter of downloading the Frameworks you need:
" Qgis requires the GDAL 1.6, PROJ, GEOS, SQLite3, and UnixImageIO
frameworks. "
And any other Frameworks you feel you will need/use in conjunction.
William has created binary Installers for each framework, so there is
no need to compile anything.
Simply read the ReadMe.rtf files inside each package if you are unsure.
