It works fine for me in qgis 1.0.2 as well as 1.2.0. What version of
gdal? Mine is 1.6.0.
My layer properties are set to single gray band using band 1 and a
grayscale colormap. Also, the contrast enhancement setting is "Stretch
to MinMax".

Yes, it seems that I can display the data using the 'pseudocolor' or
'freak out' (what exactly is that?) color maps. The 'grayscale' color
map just gives a solid gray rectangle, whereas the 'colormap' option
gives just a blank background. I would prefer a simple grayscale
image.
Any suggestions on how to accomplish this with qgis 1.0.2 compiled
from source?
