Based on intuition
I think that Ctr++ and Ctrl+- are the way to go for the zoom (as
described in
the manual!), they should just work.
Anyway, if we are going to be able of customizing all this, no problem
Thanks, at least I can zoom with the keyboard now!
One last thought: at least as an option, should not zooming re-center
the image so that the
current position defined by the pointer become the new center?

When I use Ctrl++ (or Ctrl+-) in qgis 1.1.0 unstable for ubuntu
I just get the sign changed to + (or -), but not actual zoom in
or out. Is this a bug or is it intentional? If it's intentional,
then the user has to click with the mouse, which is
against the essence of a keyboard shortcut (and very
inconvenient in the field).
Just tested on debian: The short cuts for zooming and panning with the keyboard
works like this:
Place the mouse cursor inside the map area (or activate the map area with the
tab key) then use the arrow keys for panning and the up and down keys for
zooming.
The combination (mouse + keys) you described works also, of course.
