I think you were right Alex. I found two GDAL installs, only one of which had MrSID and ECW capability. Only one was removable via Synaptic - the wrong one. I since tried to destroy everything GDAL on my machine to start again. I'll see what happens.

Are you using GDAL from Ubuntugis, source or another repo? QGIS might be using a different GDAL install than the 1st one on your path as shown by GDALformats.
