I've found the following solution that works with my fiel, not sure
if it would work in general:
1. Uncompress as if the *.kmz file were a compressed file (may be you
have to rename it to *.zip in windows). You'll get a *.kml file
2. Open the *.kml file with Qgis
Hope this work for other people as well.

No it's not.
kmz as well as kmls containing a mixture of placemarks, lines and
polygons. In order to load kmls in QGIS or use ogr, you should create
separate files for each vector type.
hope that helps.

Is not possible to open a kmz file in qgis?
or am I not seeing an obvious option?
I've tried with OGR converter also.
Thanks
