Hi Marco,
thanks! did not know that ...
for people pointing to Google and there licenses: using opensource tools
it's pretty easy to fire up your own tiling service (eg using TileCache,
see www.tilecache.org) using your own or 'open data'.
And there is always Openstreetmap (www.openstreetmap.org), which can be
used. For example here in the netherlands this has a very good coverage,
and there are even tiling services available for the openstreetmap data
in our national projection system epsg:28992.
For a nice reference-layer in a map, I think the ability to use those
services would be very very usefull.
So Jurgen if you have something to show ;-) or need some help, please
let us know.

Richard Duivenvoorde

Hi Richard
There is a project to support WMS-C and other tile services.
Jürgen is going to work on that.

Is it possible to use google maps or the MS equivalent in qgis,

Hi,
no there is at this moment no such way to use those kind of maps. These
kind of services are called 'Tiled Map Services', and one of the
drawbacks of these are that (without othere rescaling clientside) they
serve only (map tile) images for fixed scales.
We have been thinking about it at an earlier hackfest, but up untill now
nobody has started to work on it.
Theoretically it would be feasible: just provide some 'tile-scheme' to a
WMS-T/TMS/-layer and provide the service url.
Then the layer could retrieve the 'capabilities' and from that on maybe
the map will be frozen to only the scales provided by this Tiled Map
Server (?).
Map-Libraries like openlayers also have this notion of either 'free
scaling' or 'fixed scales'.
But somebody should pick up this glove :-)
Regards,
Richard Duivenvoorde
