Some of the issues you mentioned are already addressed in the newer builds
(1.4 and current trunk).

this is a good suggestion. Not yet available. Maybe the developers could
discuss this in Pisa?

This is already possible. You need to change the behavior:

Options --> MapTools --> Identify Mode --> set to "top down" or "top down,
stop at first" - depending if you want to get all hits or want to stop at
the first hit. You need at least QGIS 1.4 or higher.

I think this is addressed in recent builds and for some while already.

Good suggestion - I don't know if there are easy fixes for this.

Good to hear that you are using QGIS in teaching! Keep us informed about
