Hello Paolo,
I think that the problem actually exists with Python in Debian Squeeze.
Python 2.6.5 does NOT support the sipconfig module which prevents me
compiling from source.
I assume that it is also has problems with other Python modules. If you
are able to build QGIS with Python 2.5 then I would be happy - I think.

I downloaded the ver 1.5 deb packages and after a bit of problem with
the gqis& qgis-common inter-dependency issue I managed to get
everything installed. Now however I have the following problem:
Couldn't load SIP module.
Python support will be disabled.
You're right, some modules from unstable are needed. I'll sort out the issue
ASAP. In
the meantime, if someone can understand which modules, please tell us. I'll put
up a
README as soon as the issue will be solved.
All the best.
