Some WFS servers advertise all fields as text by default. Could you check what 
the DescribeFeatureType (e.g. 
'http://mywfs.com/wfs?SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=1.0.0&REQUEST=DescribeFeatureType&TYPENAME=<layername>')
 
output is?
